| Wallaby Bounces Back into Captivity Cornered at HRF after 3 weeks on the run... Philadelphia Inquirer - 7/7/04 By Christine Schiavo, Staff Writer Melbourne the wayward wallaby is back in his cage after a three-week flight that left the cavorting marsupial no worse for wear. "He's friendlier than he's ever been," said Charis Matey, owner of the Peaceable Kingdom in Wrightstown, from which Melbourne escaped on June 12. "It's almost like he had a vacation and it was good for him." Melbourne's vacation ended at HICKORY RUN horse farm in Upper Makefield Township on Saturday afternoon, Matey said. It couldn't have happened at a more inopportune time - she was giving children pony rides at a birthday party in Levittown, about 30 minutes away. Matey was called to Hickory Run on Friday night, where workers had cornered Melbourne. But the miniature kangaroo managed to hop away. By the time Matey made it back to Hickory Run the next day, Roy Silcox (owner Penny Silcox's brother), and his friend Mike Ragnoli had Melbourne safely trapped in a 9-foot-high stable stall. "I wouldn't have been able to catch him without those guys," Matey said. When a tranquilizer dart failed to penetrate the 35-pound animal, Silcox said he and Ragnoli decided to corner him between a fence and pine tree. Melbourne kicked as they grabbed him, but the pair were able to carry Melbourne a quarter-mile to the stable. "I never met anything pound for pound that strong," Silcox said yesterday. Ragnoli, a deer hunter who tackled the wallaby hunt as a challenge, said it took him, Silcox, and several other people about five hours to corner the animal. "It was fast," he said. "Everybody was trying to catch it, so it was scared." The hunt left Ragnoli with a scratch on his arm. But Melbourne seemed unscathed, Matey said. "He lost a little bit of weight," she said. "But he looks good." |
